If you suspect you have mold in your home, look out for these seven telltale signs. These signs can help you identify a potential problem.
A musty odor could be the one of the only mold signs that your home has. If you can smell mold there is likely mold under something or mold in something. Just because you can’t always see mold doesn’t mean mold problems aren’t there. This is a sign to take action, because if you can smell mold, a health risk may be present, according to the CDC.
Cough or Allergy Symptoms
Toxic black mold can cause respiratory-related health problems causing sinus congestion, shortness of breath or a chronic cough. You may not see the mold, but it still affects you. It can grow in walls, under the carpet, in the basement, even in your mattresses.
Signs of Condensation, Water Leaks or Past Flooding
Having a water leak that is fixed right away shouldn’t cause any issues, but if it isn’t repaired right away, or reoccurs it can cause mold growth. This happens a lot with condensation as it is sometimes harder to spot and can take longer to locate. If you had flooding in your home, water can be absorbed by the walls, insulation and flooring that can allow mold to grow.
Visual Mold Growth
Obviously if you can see the mold, you have it. Dark green/black slimy residue can cause you issues. Some mold spores look like dirt. It is important that if you spot anything that looks like mold, you should have a mold inspection right away to make sure it is removed and that it isn’t toxic.
